Over the centuries we have seen how gender roles play a big part in our everyday life and especially in the work field, we normally wont expect a male for a receptionist nor as a hostess at a restaurant, society has simulated to this idea so well that whenever we do see a male in what we would call a “female” job we come up with what we assume to be three rational explanation to why they would be carrying on such a job title. It seems to be that we instantly draw the connection that they are only doing these types of jobs temporarily until they get on top of the work chain. If not we just assume that they are a failure and couldn’t cut it in school, and our last assumption would be that there is just something wrong with their sexual orientation so we conclude that they are just gay.
Jobs such as babysitting have been predominately a female thing to do so when we think about a male taking on the job of a babysitter we assume that they are sexual predators out to get our kids. We normally just blurt things out without really thinking about what we say, but what can really give us the peace of mind that our kids will be in perfect hands if they are being taken care of by a female versus a male babysitter. In an article I found call “male versus Female babysitters” provided by http://www.thelaboroflove.com, it talks about traditional image that society has and how studies show that both males and females are equally capable of harming our children. It also states that because of typical stereotypes will be nothing more than just stereotypes and there is much more that should be considered not just the babysitters sex.
In the reading “The Glass Escalator Hidden Advantages for Men in the Female Profession” by Christine L. Williams. She talks about the pro’s, con’s and struggles males indoor because of the types of professions they go for. The reading also points out how males get discriminated within their work area by the females in the same work field as them. Their job skills are not used and they just get assigned to do things because of their sex not their job title. This reading reflect when a male goes for a traditional females jobs such as teachers for pre- school, his co-workers which are manly females will always ask for his help when it comes to them needing a handy hand around the work area. Not that they can’t ask for help but if there were no males the probabilities of a female asking another female is not likely to happen, but once the male figure comes into the picture is as if everything changes and he’s the only one good enough for the job, but they sure won’t ask him for help when it comes to the decorating. And when they do consider males by their job titles which would be teachers they will most likely send the “bad” kids to him for discipline.
The idea of the male figure being paternal with children is general miss- constructed affecting males in pros suing the carriers that make them happy because of stereotypes that are tied with it. What we have to remember is that crime can be committed by both males and females so we can’t just draw conclusions that fall under the category of stereotypes because these are the types of ideas that hold people back from being all they can be.
With the way things have been coming along because of the economy many people have lost their jobs. In today’s day and age woman have accomplished to be seen as equal worthy adversaries to men, a lot has been fought for over the years by the women’s rights movement such as voting, equal job opportunities and so much more. If we as females have gotten this far by asking and fighting for male to treat us as there equals than why can’t we as females teat males interested in what has been a female dominated work area. We should be happy that there are males that are interested in expanding their window of opportunity.
