paper#2

Jacqueline Tavera
ENG 101-0800

Over the centuries we have seen how gender roles play a big part in our everyday life and especially in the work field, we normally wont expect a male for a receptionist nor as a hostess at a restaurant, society has simulated to this idea so well that whenever we do see a male in what we would call a “female” job we come up with what we assume to be three rational explanation to why they would be carrying on such a job title. It seems to be that we instantly draw the connection that they are only doing these types of jobs temporarily until they get on top of the work chain. If not we just assume that they are a failure and couldn’t cut it in school, and our last assumption would be that there is just something wrong with their sexual orientation so we conclude that they are just gay.
Jobs such as babysitting have been predominately a female thing to do so when we think about a male taking on the job of a babysitter we assume that they are sexual predators out to get our kids. We normally just blurt things out without really thinking about what we say, but what can really give us the peace of mind that our kids will be in perfect hands if they are being taken care of by a female versus a male babysitter. In an article I found call “male versus Female babysitters” provided by http://www.thelaboroflove.com, it talks about traditional image that society has and how studies show that both males and females are equally capable of harming our children. It also states that because of typical stereotypes will be nothing more than just stereotypes and there is much more that should be considered not just the babysitters sex.
In the reading “The Glass Escalator Hidden Advantages for Men in the Female Profession” by Christine L. Williams. She talks about the pro’s, con’s and struggles males indoor because of the types of professions they go for. The reading also points out how males get discriminated within their work area by the females in the same work field as them. Their job skills are not used and they just get assigned to do things because of their sex not their job title. This reading reflect when a male goes for a traditional females jobs such as teachers for pre- school, his co-workers which are manly females will always ask for his help when it comes to them needing a handy hand around the work area. Not that they can’t ask for help but if there were no males the probabilities of a female asking another female is not likely to happen, but once the male figure comes into the picture is as if everything changes and he’s the only one good enough for the job, but they sure won’t ask him for help when it comes to the decorating. And when they do consider males by their job titles which would be teachers they will most likely send the “bad” kids to him for discipline.
The idea of the male figure being paternal with children is general miss- constructed affecting males in pros suing the carriers that make them happy because of stereotypes that are tied with it. What we have to remember is that crime can be committed by both males and females so we can’t just draw conclusions that fall under the category of stereotypes because these are the types of ideas that hold people back from being all they can be.
With the way things have been coming along because of the economy many people have lost their jobs. In today’s day and age woman have accomplished to be seen as equal worthy adversaries to men, a lot has been fought for over the years by the women’s rights movement such as voting, equal job opportunities and so much more. If we as females have gotten this far by asking and fighting for male to treat us as there equals than why can’t we as females teat males interested in what has been a female dominated work area. We should be happy that there are males that are interested in expanding their window of opportunity.

Thesis: "war of the sexes in the work field". Do males face the same kind or types of struggles in the work field when they have jobs in the "female area?"
Point 1: when working in a "female" job are males assigned to do their job because of their job title or their sex/gender.
Point 2: when claiming the corporate ladder as a male is it viewed good or bad. is that the manly thing to do is it just cheating the system?
Point 3: what is the female outlook in the working world when a man has a "female" job. How do females really feel about men coming into the field?

Paper

Jacqueline Tavera
ENG 101-0800

When we think about the ideal kind of guy the physical part seems to never skip our minds, it’s as if we automatically connect being physically fit and being in shape a masculine thing for males to do but is being on the heavier side less masculine for a male. Well statistically speaking there are over 20 different kinds of male fitness magazines in the US, but in “Men’s Fitness” which is the magazine I pick for my research over all in the year 2010 I found a few issues that highlighted the essences of being physically fit and how otherwise is would just be lame.
In the issues for October 2010 just the cover read “Ripped & Stronger, 88 Ways to Lose Fat, Get Lean, Our Boxing Workout Will Change Your Body in 30Day.” When you go to the article and read it just down talks anything other than being “ripped” as bad. Any of the articles of which read from the cover were only about comparing body types and giving you tips on how to work on yourself to become more ideal to the idea that they are trying to project out as masculine, the selection of wording the use targeted the reader like ”Get Lean” or “Change”.
When you take a look at the issues for November 2010 in big bold black letters it reads “Burn Body Fat Fast” goes on by saying “Build A Hardcore NFL Body” and on the opposite side it reads “Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam, his rugged body-weight work out will get you ripped”. When I read the articles I move than convinced that there is no other way I could survive in the world if I were a male and was not ripped like Charlie Hunnam or like any of the NFL players that are in top physical shape.
Another eye catching issues I found was the new December issues 2010, it has an article on Mike also known as “The Situation” from Jersey Shore, the title is “How to drink and get abs like Mike”. In it he gives the 8 fit rules he live by a few of them where just basics but when I got to rule number seven which states, “Make working out your No.1 commitment, because it builds the confidence and discipline you need to succeed in every domain of your life.” In every one of the quotes I found a physically fit male is the more ideal kind of guy Men’s Fitness projects as the right kind of masculinity any guy what to become. And if there are and opposing view to that idea they target the reader by using key words that down talk any potential thought the reader might have as to why he is not fit and how that plays out in his life to the reason on why he is the way he is.
Over all the idea of what is the right type or kind of male to be just to seem masculine in obscene for the reason that by targeting in an isolated way human defects seem to be the only way to outcast the male reader to feed into the stereotypical persona of how the media targets the males of today’s day and age to be walking advertisements in the sense that they are brain washed and become highly uncomfterble with them self.

Thesis: being more physically fit makes you more masculine.

Google.com – GQ’s masculine hair style list. 11-08-2010

David Beckham
Because Style Ain’t Always About the Clothes
Sometimes it’s about carriage. Attitude. Swagger. Beckham’s simply got it—what soccer coaches call intangibles and we call style. The haircut and stubble help. So does the physique. He’s got it even when he’s thrown his shirt in the crowd and is wearing nothing more than a pair of shorts and his game face.
Robert Pattinson
The Best Head of Hair on the Planet
Young Rob’s probably got the best head of hair since James Dean, and he lets it fly. And the clothes? A pair of jeans, a T-shirt, an unbuttoned and untucked plaid shirt...That’s it. He dresses his age (23); he dresses to his strengths; he dresses so you don’t give a damn about how he’s dressed.
Tom Brady
The Power of the Rugged Look
“I don’t like it when I’m so clean-shaven; it just feels very...raw. I love that day-old or two-day-old beard. Gisele? Well, I think she likes the way the beard looks, but she doesn’t like the way it feels—it pokes her face.”

When we normally think about advertisement and who they are mostly advertised too we would think women, whether be clothing, house hold or even children things truth be told even male things are advertised towards females, shockingly that is correct but over the past couple of years we have seen the many different changes that have been going on around us, like that sensational hit’s “Jersey Shore”, ”Tool Academy” and many other television shows of such context we’ve seen how the men that participate in these shows have different hair styles and styles but never the less they are all masculine. When we take a look at male magazines such as GQ we see how they have come up with a list of different types of hair styles that are considered masculine, it’s an elaborate piece that gives a description of various styles in which the reader can pick and choice from the one “he” would feel more familiar with it describes each style from head to toe and to finalize it give you the type of hair style that is more appropriate for the style.
It’s an unfamiliar term of events that’s has been happening, the reason why I use the term “unfamiliar” is because when articles such magnitude where published for men they were considered to be homosexual and now they are considered informational. Even from the way they are published to the way it’s worded it projects such strong masculine rough edges to it. Like quoting the descriptions of David Beckham it starts out by saying “Because Style Ain’t Always About the Clothes” and it goes on by saying “Sometimes it’s about carriage, attitude, swagger. Beckham” simply got it”. This introduction itself screams out clearly “the perfect description of what makes men” we can see how they are trying really hard to not lose that masculinity sound.

Reflections on Bormantic Comedy

Title: Wedding Crashers
Director: David Dobkin
Actors/Performers(at least two): Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Christopher Walkin
Distributor:
Year: 2005
Meduim: Film
1.) The main male characters behave in a very "hoe" like why, they think of females as an object to have fun with only. They only respect other males if their behavios is "masculine" just like the main characters. The media and mostly everything we can think of project masculinity to be a player guys who can gt with as much females as they can.
2.) Well both bonds are emphasised, the males are good friends that trust each other with telling each other how they feel even if its kind of hard for them to do. And when it comes to male female relatonships normally males can be true to the females if they have feelings for them if not . And thats what the movie shows even is that even if its hard to do, so it kind of what David Grazina.
3.) Well to me the ultimate message is that no matter what ideas are projected towards males about what masculinity is you should always stay true to yourself and how you feel.

Annotated Bibliography

ENG 101-0800 fall 1 2010
Jacqueline Tavera
Research Paper 1 Assignment and Guidelines: Masculinity in Men’s Magazines
GQ Magazine November 2009
Junod, Tom. “My Mom Couldn’t Cook.” Esquire 154.2 (Sept. 2010):152-153. Print.

Iv’ been researching GQ’s magazine, and I’ve pick a few issues to show how propaganda is pull more towards how man should look and what is the more trendy attire to wear for each season not only that is even gives you tips on what kind of hair look you should go for. The articles in each of the magazines I have picked give a very point plain outlook on what should be worn for the season in a very convincing argument.
On January 27, 2010, GQ posted an article called “Make This Year a Perfect ‘10” in it heading was “A GQ 10-point plan for manhandling the year ahead-in high style” the article goes on by giving a list of do’s and don’ts. One of the thing I came across was the list of different ways famous people have their hair and how they like it, it’s basically a recommendation list of what types of hair styles men should vote for that would keep their masculinity in tack without really going to extreme ways to try and get them. The site is posted so if you’re a guy and want to look good without sacrificing your masculinity, than this is the advertisement for you. MY "OUTLINE"

Thesis:  Subliminal messages in our every day media

Topic1: What we view as harmless is nothing less than one of the most blunt way to let us know how much we’ve really change our stands in everyday living over the years.
Many different kinds of advertisement but all with the same concept.
The “dynamic” perspectives the media takes too send out the same message.
Topic2: How tradition/custom affect gender roles in simple thing like posing in a picture.
The way males pose Vs female posing.
   The “do’s and don’ts ” “may and may not’s”
Topic3: Sweetly coated lies we tell our self’s too make everything just a bit more bearable.
The unrealistic pictures meant too symbols the guide lines and standers we live by.
The images that are projected in the media.

my outline

Paper #1 Outline
In today’s society men are pressured to live up to certain expectations, such requirements are what moles them and helps them become what the ideal male figure is. Simple thing like from the way they sit to the kind of jobs and pass times they are allowed to have are subliminally passed on to them by the media and the everyday life that surrounds them. In my advertisement the caption itself says a lot “You can wait for luck to find you or you can make your own” it goes on by saying “Find your luck at Caesars, book your stay today.” But the picture itself says 1,000 words.
If we take a step back for a minute and look around at the advertisements we’ll see that the male figure is always posing in a “caught me doing something” pose and if there are any female in the advertisement we’ll see that they are mostly sitting around standing up or just looking pretty for the viewers to glace upon it’s as if female roles are not important enough as male roles that even in simple advertisement sexism is in the propaganda. In my ad the guys are playing a game of poker and the females are sitting around are standing just looking at the guys play. The rest of the ad has a female laying in bed with very few clothes on and a bunch of gifts on top of her.
From first look it may just seem like nothing but if you think about it you never see any ad where the male figure is laying in bed top less with all the gifts on top of him in a very sexual pose, you won’t even find advertisements in which a casino has females playing poker and the men all around them as if they were the good luck charms. What you will find is females being showered in gifts by men the ad will normally have them coming out or walking into a very prestigious store and the male models will be paying for everything with a facial expression of “money is not a problem for me” and the female models will have the expression of “OMG ! He is such a good guy because he has money and can buy me things”. The reality is that in today’s world men and women both can work and buy themselves what they’d like all it takes it a little bit of effort in per suing what one wants for him or herself.
The over look or view that society has on how things are not very accurate. The message they send out about female is that they only like men with money, and all men should be able to buy females gifts and that how the magic between sexes works. But what happens to the men that don’t have money and the females that don’t fall for the money bags are they living a wrong life style. I guess the advertisement company’s don’t think people can live a life out of the common believe of what is and is not the right way to live. Maybe if the advertisement company’s display a more realistic outlook on what really happens on a day to day bases there sales won’t be so high so the illusion of a utopian society fills up the minds of the buyers because it sounds more believe just like fairy tales and unicorns such things don’t exist but the harsh reality is too much for some people to handle that they hide behind an idea an illusion.
We can change the world from such guide lines by changeing the way we do things today. This is a cause that will not only help us but it will allow us to better our self's and our futures by the small baby steps we embrace today. By breaking the chain's that has been passed on to us by our fore fathers will learn how to value people for who and what they really are it's small steps like this that will set the path for equality and a more suitable enviorment rather than a hostile habitat that will only make things worst in the long run, it's not that difficult to preside the wrong that might happen, all we have to do is look back into the lives of people before us and our time to see what extreme conditions people were willing and are willing to go to all because of lack of education.

the male privilege check list

# 9 : Not having kids.
i feel very strong about this one for the fact that it's so true if a male does not want to have kids the world views it as an ok thing to do they might even say it's because he has not found the right one yet, but if a female does not have kid or a husband by their timing there is something wrong with her and there would be no question's asked she would be looked down on as a shamefull family member they might even remind her evry time they see her or even when another female who is younger is getting marrided.
that's so not cool ..

working computers!

in class trying 2 work w/ my blog which by the way is very hard...
